Etymology. From Indo-European *bʰuH- 'to be, grow, become'. Cognates: English 'be', German 'bin', Latin 'fui' (past of sum), Sanskrit 'bhavati'. The root appears in English 'been' and in many Romance languages (French 'être', Italian 'essere'). The present stem ho- is suppletive, replacing the regular bhava- in present and imperative forms.
