Etymology. Demonstrative pronoun from Indo-European *i-mo-, the root of 'this' seen also in Latin is, iste and English it. The feminine -ā ending marks the gender; the genitive and dative -ssā ending is the same Pali instrumental/locative marker that appears in kasmā 'why' (lit. 'from what').
