Etymology. From √jivh-, a root of uncertain origin within Pali, possibly related to Sanskrit jihvā (tongue). The root appears to have no clear Indo-European cognates; it may be a substrate word or ancient onomatopoeia (the tongue's agility). Sanskrit jihvā, Prakrit jivhā show the same stem across the MIA languages.
