Etymology. From PIE *kʰay- 'to lie, settle' (cognate with Latin cavus 'hollow', Greek kheîos 'empty'). The primary sense is 'accumulation' (things that settle or collect together), whence 'body' as an accumulation of physical elements and 'group' as a collection of individuals. Sanskrit kāya, Vedic kíṃ 'what' (from the same root treating the accumulated mass as material substance).
