Built from
- kā — root · pile, accumulate
From √kī. The image is material things heaped or gathered together; extended to the body as an accumulation of form (rūpa), sensation (vedanā), and other aggregates.
- ya — ending · nominative singular masculine
The -ya ending in masculines of this type marks nominative singular and distinguishes this form from oblique cases (kāyassa, genitive; kāyena, instrumental).
Etymology. From the root √kī (to pile up, accumulate) or related to Sanskrit kāya. The concrete sense is 'heap' or 'accumulation', extended to body as the accumulated aggregate of physical form, and to any collection or group. English cognate: heap is unrelated; but the underlying sense of 'stacked' or 'piled' appears in kṣaya (decay, wearing away) in Sanskrit, where the opposite process applies.
