Etymology. From the root √kī (to pile up, accumulate) or related to Sanskrit kāya. The concrete sense is 'heap' or 'accumulation', extended to body as the accumulated aggregate of physical form, and to any collection or group. English cognate: heap is unrelated; but the underlying sense of 'stacked' or 'piled' appears in kṣaya (decay, wearing away) in Sanskrit, where the opposite process applies.
