Etymology. Root √khī (to wear away, consume), cognate with Sanskrit kṣīyate (is diminished, wears away) and Greek phthīnō (I waste away, perish). The sense develops from the concrete image of wearing down or rubbing away to the abstract idea of exhaustion and depletion. Related to English consume via the sense of gradual diminishment.
