Etymology. Root √kham, 'to bear, endure, be patient'; cognate with Sanskrit kṣam-, Greek χάζω (khazō) 'to give way', and English 'chasm' (originally 'opening, gap' from sense of yielding ground). The sense shifts from spatial 'giving way, yielding' to temporal 'bearing up under, putting up with'.
