Etymology. From Sanskrit kṣatriya (क्षत्रिय), from kṣatra 'rule, dominion' (related to √kṣam 'to bear, rule'). The word denotes the second varna of the traditional four-fold caste system, those who rule and make war. English 'shah' (Persian derivation) and 'satrap' are distantly cognate through Indo-European *kseu̯- 'to cut, rule'.
