Built from
- labh — root · seize, obtain
An ancient root expressing grasping or taking hold. The spatial image of seizing persists in abstract uses: 'to obtain understanding' is to seize or grasp it mentally.
- e — ending · optative thematic vowel
The thematic vowel e marks the optative mood, expressing wish, permission, or possibility.
- yya — ending · 3rd singular optative
Suffix marking third-person singular optative; the geminate yy arises from contraction after the thematic vowel.
Etymology. Root √labh, cognate with Sanskrit labh, English *leap (the underlying image of grasping, seizing in motion). The optative expresses what may or should be obtained—possibility or permission.
