Analysis. licchavisatāni = licchavis (Licchavi, a Vajjian clan) + satāni (nominative/accusative/vocative plural of satam, 'hundred'); a dvandva or numeral compound denoting 'hundred Licchavis' or 'the Licchavis (numbering) one hundred'

Etymology. Licchavi is an ethnic term for members of the Licchavi republic, one of the great Vajjian confederacies of the Buddha's time. The second element satāni is the neuter plural of satam (hundred), from Proto-Indo-European *km̥-tóm; cognates include Sanskrit śatam, Greek hekatón, Latin centum, English hundred. The neuter plural ending -āni preserves the original Indo-European collective neuter suffix.
