Etymology. From Proto-Indo-European *srom-, the same root as Sanskrit romá-, Greek tríkhōs (indirect), Latin pilus. The root concept is 'that which stands out or projects from the skin'; compare English 'hair' (from PIE *ker- 'to stand out'). Pali loma shows normal phonetic development from the IE ancestor.
