nominative singular neuter of mūla
Etymology. From Indo-European *mul- 'to grind, mill'. Cognate with Latin molō 'I grind' and English mill. The semantic shift from grinding (pulverizing into fine particles at the base) to the root of a plant is natural: roots are the basal, ground-level part. In Buddhist doctrine, mūla refers to the three unwholesome roots (lobha, dosa, moha — greed, aversion, delusion) that underlie all suffering.
