Etymology. From Proto-Indo-European *men- 'to think, to mind', the root underlying Sanskrit manas, Greek menos 'spirit, courage', Latin mens 'mind', English mind. The Pali form preserves the ancient neuter n-stem noun, here inflected in the locative singular (manasi 'in the mind') to express the local sense 'in thought', 'in mental attention'.
