meda

masc nom sg of meda (noun)

  1. fat

Etymology. From Indo-European *med- 'to be greasy, soft', cognate with Latin medulla 'marrow, pith' and Sanskrit medas 'fat'. The root conveys the concrete sense of soft, yielding substance; compare English 'marrow' (PIE *mer- 'soft parts'). In medical and philosophical contexts, meda represents one of the bodily constituents (dhātu) considered in Pali anatomy.
