Etymology. Of uncertain origin. The word appears in Buddhist texts as a standard unit of time (1/30 of a day, approximately 48 minutes), but its etymology is obscure. No secure Indo-European cognates are attested. Sanskrit muhūrta shows the same root; possibly connected to roots meaning 'to turn' or 'to move', but the connection is not established with confidence.
