Etymology. From the root √nand 'to rejoice, be glad'. The suffix -ka is a diminutive or agent noun forming element common in Pali. Sanskrit cognate nandaka, from √nand (Sanskrit √nand 'to delight'). The root √nand is cognate with Sanskrit nandati and may be connected to Indo-European *nend- 'to spin' (underlying joy as something that binds), though the semantic connection is uncertain.
