Etymology. From a root meaning 'to turn' or 'to revolve', related to Sanskrit nemi 'wheel-rim' and ultimately to the Indo-European root *nem- 'assign, distribute, turn'. The rim as the part that turns and circles. Cognate with Greek nemein 'to distribute, allot' (via the image of rotation and division into parts).
