Etymology. Related to Sanskrit nemi 'rim, wheel-edge', from PIE *nem- 'to distribute, allot' (the rim as the boundary that distributes the wheel). Cognate with Greek nemein 'to distribute', Latin nemesis (as boundary-marker, divider of fates). The concrete image is the rim as the dividing edge of the wheel.
