Etymology. From PIE *sner- 'to twist, turn'; cognate with Sanskrit snāyu-, Greek neuron (νεῦρον) 'sinew, nerve', Latin nervus 'nerve, sinew', English sinew. The Pali form shows regular nasal-prothesis before initial *sn-, a phonetic development well attested in Dravidian and some Indo-Aryan languages.
