Etymology. nis- (out, away from) + √bid (to fear, shrink from), originally "shrinking away from" the world; cognate with Latin fīdō "trust" (opposite pole of the same root of confidence and recoil). The prefix nis- reverses and negates, making nibbidā the turning away from illusion through direct perception.
