Etymology. nis (out of, away from) + rodha (blocking, from √rudh 'to block, obstruct'). The prefix nis- carries its sense of 'out, away' to form a word whose concrete image is 'the blocking away' or 'obstruction removed'—hence in doctrine, the cessation of suffering. Cognate with Sanskrit nirodha and English nether (the downward prefix ni-).
