3rd sg. present indicative of nisīdati
Analysis. nisīda + iti; nisīdā + iti
Etymology. ni- (down, into) + √sīd (sit, sink). The prefix ni- gives the sense of downward motion or settling into a place; √sīd is cognate with Latin sedēre (sit) and English sit, from Indo-European *sed- (settle, sit). The emotional sense (becomes disheartened) derives from the literal sinking down: the mind sinks or collapses inward.
