Analysis. nis + yāna + -ika: 'of the going out', a path or means leading out (from saṃsāra).
Etymology. nis- (out of, away from) + yāna (going, from √yam 'to go') + -ika (adjectival suffix). The prefix nis-, meaning 'out' or 'away from', appears also in nibbāna (the fire blown out). The root yāna belongs to the Sanskrit yayati and English 'yonder', originally denoting motion away. Together, niyyānika describes what conducts one out of the cycle of rebirth — a doctrinal term for paths, practices, or teachings that lead to liberation.
