Analysis. paṭi- (back, in return, counter to) + ākaṅkhati (desires, wishes). Literally 'wished back' or 'counter-wished', hence 'anticipated' or 'what is to be expected in return'.

Etymology. From paṭi- 'back, against' (Greek proti 'toward, against') + ā- 'toward' + √kaṅkh- 'to wish, desire'. The prefix combination paṭi + ā reverses and internalizes the sense of wishing: what one looks back toward or expects to come to oneself.
