pāsādaṁ

pāsāda

accusative singular of pāsāda (m.)

  1. palace, mansion
  2. temple, shrine
  3. staircase, steps

Analysis. Possibly from Sanskrit prāsāda, originally a raised platform or superstructure; the concrete image of a high, elevated structure (from *prā- "forth" + *sad- "sit, settle") underlies both royal dwellings and sacred buildings. In the canon, pāsāda denotes both royal apartments and monastic structures.

Etymology. Sanskrit prāsāda; the root imagery of elevation and prominence ("something standing forth") gave rise to the sense of distinguished buildings—palaces, temples, and staircases that command space. No secure Indo-European cognate.
