accusative singular neuter (or nominative plural neuter), repeated for emphasis (paṇīta-paṇītaṁ); adjective
Analysis. Repetition for emphasis: paṇīta 'refined' + paṇītaṁ 'refined' — a common Pali figure expressing intensity or abundance ("refined and refined", i.e. very refined).
Etymology. From paṇ- (to spread, expand, unfold); related to Sanskrit paṇya- 'merchandise, goods' (what is spread out for sale). The notion of 'refined' arises from the idea of things spread out, displayed, and selected as choice. Not cognate with English 'pan' or 'pan-' despite surface similarity.
