panāvuso
sandhi contraction (pana + āvuso)
- and friend; and what's more brothers
Built from
- pana — root · and, moreover
An indeclinable particle reinforcing contrast and addition; cognate with Sanskrit puna 'again' and Greek palin 'again', both from PIE *per- 'to go forward'. The sense 'and moreover' emerges from the notion of stepping forward to the next point.
- āvuso — stem · friend, sir
Vocative of avuso (nominative), itself a colloquial address meaning 'friend' or 'sir'; used affectionately among monks and in dialogue. The root is uncertain, but the form is native Pali, unattested in Sanskrit, and may derive from a-√vas- 'to dwell' (one who dwells with you), or be an autonomous term of familiarity.
Analysis. pana 'and, moreover' + āvuso 'friend, sir' (vocative of āvuso). The contraction drops the initial a of āvuso after pana's final vowel, creating panāvuso as a single emphatic address: 'and friend' or 'and what's more, brothers'.
