Analysis. pari- + odāta: 'completely washed away' (odāta < uda- 'water' + *dāta 'washed', but synchronically analysed as past participle of odāyati 'cleanses, purifies'). The prefix pari- 'all the way round, completely' intensifies the sense of cleansing to mean thoroughgoing purity, used doctrinally of the purification of mind from defilements.
Etymology. The root is √dā 'to wash' or 'to put, place'; pari- (from *pari 'around, about', cognate with Greek peri-, Latin per-) adds the sense of completeness. The word's imagery is of water washing away all impurity — hence both literal cleanliness and metaphorical spiritual purity. Compare Latin purus and Greek katharos.
