Etymology. Root √paś (Sanskrit paśyati 'sees') with -a noun suffix. The concrete sense 'side' develops from 'that which is seen' or 'the side one looks toward'. Cognate with English peer, Latin perspicere, Greek opsesthai (all from IE *okw- 'to see'), though the Pali semantic path via 'observable surface' is distinct. Sanskrit pakṣa ('side', also 'wing', 'faction') shows a similar semantic development from the same root.
