An adjective of unclear internal structure; possibly connected to roots meaning 'to bristle' or 'to carry (a burden)', but the morpheme boundary is uncertain. Attested in Buddhist Sanskrit parallels (pharuṣa) and Vedic Sanskrit bhruṣ-.

Etymology. From Indo-European *bher- 'to bear, carry'; related to Sanskrit bhru 'to frown' and cognate with English 'bear' and German 'fahren'. The sense 'harsh' develops from the image of something coarse or rough to the touch, hence difficult to bear or endure — a natural metaphorical extension seen also in Old English 'fearr' (rough, bristly).
