Etymology. From Indo-European *res- 'to flow, drip'; cognate with Latin ros 'dew', Greek rheein 'to flow'. The concrete sense of liquid flowing — juice, essence — extends to the abstract 'taste' (what the flowing liquid conveys to the palate) and 'nutriment' (what sustains). In medical and alchemical texts, rasa denotes the fundamental vital essences.
