ratti

fem instr sg of ratti (noun); fem dat sg of ratti (noun); fem abl sg of ratti (noun); fem gen sg of ratti (noun); …

  1. ratti (fem): night
  2. rattiya (adj): with days; consisting of so many nights; having nights

Etymology. From Indo-European *reg- 'to stretch out' (also 'dark, obscure'), related to Sanskrit rātri, Latin regio 'region' (originally 'stretched expanse'), and English 'right' (that which extends correctly). The semantic shift from 'stretch/expanse' to 'night' reflects the night as an extended dark expanse.
