Etymology. From Sanskrit vṛkṣa (tree), cognate with Greek drys, Latin quercus (oak), and English oak — all descending from the Indo-European root *dw- or *dru- (tree, wood, firm). The initial v- of Sanskrit became r- in Pali through regular sound change.
