Etymology. Proto-Indo-European *so-, the ancient demonstrative pronoun, cognate with Sanskrit tad, Greek ho/hē/to, Latin is/ea/id, and English that. The masculine form sa preserves the older stem before it was levelled to ta in Pali's nom/acc sg.
