Etymology. From Indo-European *segh- "to have, hold, overcome"; cognate with Sanskrit sahate, Latin seges "sown field" (what the earth holds), and English "sake" (from Old Norse, "cause held to matter"). The sense development moves from holding or gripping to bearing a burden, then to withstanding and overcoming it.
