Analysis. saka + dā + gāmī: 'one who goes (gāmī) only once (saka) more (dā). A technical term of the Four Paths denoting the Sakadāgāmī-phala, the fruit of the second ariyan attainment, wherein rebirth is limited to a single return to the sensuous realm.

Etymology. saka 'one' (from Old Indo-European *sem- 'one, together', cognate with Latin semel 'once', English same); dā 'again, once more' (adverbial particle, compare Sanskrit dā, related to Latin dare 'give' in the sense of 'deal out'); gāmī 'going, one who goes' (from √gam 'go', cognate with English come, Latin venire). The compound crystallized early in Buddhist Pali as a fixed label for a stage of spiritual progress.
