sakhā

sakha

masc nom sg of sakha (noun); masc voc sg of sakha (noun)

  1. friend; companion

Etymology. From Indo-European *sek- 'to follow, accompany'. Cognates: English "sake" (originally 'cause, matter'), Latin "sequor" 'follow', Greek "hepesthai" 'follow'. The root sense is 'one who follows along'; compare Sanskrit sakhi (feminine), which shows the same origin. The word entered Pali as a designation for a companion or associate, with the concrete image of someone who follows in one's footsteps or path.
