Built from

Analysis. sam- (together) + ā- (up to, unto) + √dhā (place): things placed together into one state of mind.

Etymology. From sam + ā + √dhā (place, put). The prefix sam- (together, with; cognate English same, Latin con-) and ā- (toward, up to; reverses motion) combine with the root √dhā (to place, put; Sanskrit dhā, cognate English do, Greek tithēmi). The compound imagery is concrete: as materials are gathered and placed together into a single pile, so mental factors are unified and settled into one collected state. In Buddhist meditation theory, samāhita describes the mind brought into unified focus—the hallmark of samādhi (collectedness).
