Etymology. From Indo-European *sem- 'one, together', cognate with English same, Latin similis 'like', Sanskrit sama-. The root sense is 'coming together' or 'fitting as one', which develops from spatial 'level, even' to relational 'equal' to psychological 'calm, undisturbed' (one's mind at rest, unified). In doctrinal Pali, samadhi and samatha embody this same root as the stilling and unification of mental factors.
