Analysis. saṁ + purisa: sa + purisa ("with man"), lit. "man together (with virtue)", i.e. a man brought into unity with moral excellence, standing complete in virtue.

Etymology. Sanskrit sappuruṣa. The prefix sam- ("together, completely") conveys the spatial image of gathering into one whole; purisa (Sk. puruṣa) is of uncertain Indo-European origin but cognate with Sanskrit pur- (to fill, make full), suggesting a sense of completeness or wholeness in the person. In the Pali canon, sappurisa denotes both the virtuous layperson and the enlightened arahant—one who is "whole", without fragmentation of mind.
