Analysis. satta (seven) + anga (factor, limb) + sam (together) + anna (having, furnished with) + gata (gone, endowed). A compound describing one furnished completely with seven constituent factors, canonical in descriptions of the Noble Eightfold Path and stages of meditative development.

Etymology. satta 'seven' is the regular Pali form of Sanskrit sapta (cognate with Latin septem, English seven). anga 'limb, factor' derives from √anj 'to anoint, move' and refers to a constituent part (like a limb of the body). samannāgata combines sam- (together, completely) with an-agata (having-gone, endowed), where the prefix sam- transforms the root √gam (go) into the sense of possession or completeness.
