Etymology. From su- (well, good) + √śū (to swell, be hollow). The sense evolved from "well-hollowed" or "properly empty" to "empty, void". Related to Sanskrit śūnya (empty, void), which enters Buddhist philosophy as the concept of emptiness (śūnyatā). The prefix su- carries its usual sense of fitness or propriety; the root √śū appears in Sanskrit śvas (to swell, breathe) and English swell.
