Etymology. su- (well, good) + gati (going, destination). su- is the Indo-European root *su- (cognate with Greek εὖ eu-, Latin suāvis sweet, English swear in the sense of confirm — all from PIE *swen- to resound, then to be agreeable). The prefix su- marks excellence and ease: sugata (well-gone) is an epithet of the Buddha. Here it qualifies gati, the destination or state reached by one's going — a core doctrinal term for the realms of rebirth.
