Etymology. From su- (well, good) + kha (empty space, aperture). The concrete image is of spacious, unobstructed ease — literally 'good space'. Cognate with Sanskrit sukha, also with English 'sky' (originally 'cloud-cover', but both words reflect PIE *k(w)elo- 'to cover, conceal'; here the negation of confinement suggests openness and ease). The word contrasts with dukkha (du- 'bad' + kha), which is the narrow, constrained opposite.
