Etymology. Past participle of √śru (śrṇoti, 'hears'), from PIE *srew- (listen, discern). Cognates: Sanskrit śruta, Greek klýō (hear), Latin credō (believe, from *cre-dwē 'give one's ear to'), English shrew (keen-eared). The sense 'son/daughter' derives from 'one born' (passive semantics of -ta), hence 'offspring heard of' or simply 'brought forth'.
