Etymology. From *tri- 'three' (Sanskrit trí, Greek treîs, Latin trēs, English three) with ordinal suffix -ya. The t- shows lenition of the initial tr- cluster; compare Sanskrit tṛtīya 'third'. The ordinal system in Pali preserves Indo-European formation patterns, with -ya serving as a productive ordinal-forming ending.
