Etymology. From the demonstrative stem *ta- (that, there) + locative suffix -tra. Cognate with Sanskrit tatra, Greek ekei (there) through the Indo-European demonstrative *to-. The suffix -tra marks location or relationship, visible also in atra (here) and yatra (where).
