masc nom sg of thūpa (noun)
Etymology. From Sanskrit sthūpa, a borrowing or cognate formation from Dravidian (Tamil tūppu 'heap'). The word entered Sanskrit from a non-Indo-European substrate language and was inherited into Pali; it does not descend from Indo-European roots and has no cognates in English, Latin, or Greek. The referent—a monument housing relics—became central to Buddhist practice, but the word itself is pre-Aryan in origin.
