Etymology. The root is Indo-European *wed- 'water', found also in Sanskrit udaka, Latin unda 'wave', English water, and German Wasser. The Pali form preserves the zero-grade *ud- of the root. The suffix -ka is a common nominal diminutive or agent marker in Pali and Sanskrit.
